Choosing Your Family's Photographer

by Atlanta Children's Photographer Julia Greer

Choosing a portrait photographer for your child or family can be overwhelming. After all, how can you trust that they will bond with your child and capture the "real" person? What if the images you see represent only their very best instead of what is typical for a session?

Fortunately, there are several ways you can be sure you're finding the very best photographer for your family. Atlanta child photographer Julia Greer offers several suggestions for finding that perfect photographer for your family.

You would think the Yellow Pages might be a good place to start, right? Actually, while a telephone directory would be useful if you need a passport photo, it's often the worst place to try to find a quality photographer who will meet your high standards, simply because it's difficult to assess a photographer's quality based on a quarter-page ad.

Instead, start with asking friends if they have worked with a photographer they love. If your neighbor raves that her photographer truly captured her baby's personality, or if you have seen a friend's portrait slideshow that brought tears to your eyes, that is certainly a photographer to add to your short list.

Of course, another good place to start your search is simply doing a Google search. Be sure to include your town and/or state in your searches so that you find photographers convenient to you (e.g., search for "Atlanta newborn photographer" or "Marietta, Georgia child photographer" rather than simply "baby photographer." The more specific your search terms, the more likely you are to find a photographer who will meet your needs.

Once you have found several possible photographers, it's time to narrow it down to the one perfect one for your family.

Once you have decided on a photographer, it is wise to be able to articulate your preferred style and any specific ideas you have for your portrait session. For instance, let your photographer know if you have a preference toward color vs. black-and-white, or if you prefer traditional portraits or more photojournalistic, editorial-style candid photography. Your photographer will be better equipped those perfect portraits for you if she understands what you envision.
